Just been for a run and I'm sweating like a pig.
Just thought I'd share that with you!
The diary of a scout leader. Hoping to explain why the likes of me do what we do together including the good the bad and the ugly!

Someof the most beautiful lyrics I've heard in a long time,
"I saw two shooting start last night
I wished on them
But they were only satelites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish that you
I wish you cared"
Billy Bragg
New England
The fact is that there are much better crafted, more subtle lyrics out there, lets face it, Shakespear this isn't. Yet in this case that is half the beauty. These are the words of an average bloke (and no individual sums up the word "bloke" that Billy Bragg!) tying to express his feelings and he manages it with such clarity. I simply love this song.

Appologies to Hecate for stealing the idea but.....
Ten things I love for no big reason
1. The sound of the local urban fox running down the lane at the end of my garden.
2. The glow from the stained glass windows from the colleges on Trinity Street
3. The sound of my girl friend singing when she thinks no one can hear her.
4. Waking up and knowing you have nothing to do.
5. The ache from my leg muscles after a long run.
6. Getting a proper letter rather than an email.
7. Making my Cubs laugh!
8. The smell of cut grass.
9. The smell of the ground after a summer storm.
10. Receiving random late night text messages.
Now it's your turn.....

The Joys of Insomnia
Its getting on for 1am on Tuesday morning and I am suffering form insomnia. It's not the first time this has happened and I doubt it will be the last, its particularly common in spring time. No idea why, I just have to deal with it when it happens.
Life is frantically busy at the moment and I do wonder whether that is the cause.
Not much else to say really. Sorry!

So.... plenty to say!
Firstly, Saturday we had District Cubs swimming gala. And my little band of cherubs were crap. They tried, my God they tried and they took their crapness with a fantastic humour (except for one indivual who sulked) but the fact is they were still crap.
One day we might win something, but with our current crop, not just yet.......
So then off I toddled to the pub with a couple of friends. I confused the bouncer at one pub, as I had come straight from the gala I had a bag with me and the conversation went something like,
"What's in your bag?"
"Believe it or not, two pairs of flippers, a scout leader uniform and a pair of flip flops?"
"You what?" (Looks in bag") "Fair do's, in you go." (Bouncer looks at me with a confused look on face).
Unfortunately this was about 9pm andhaving not eaten anything since a very early 5pm tea the beer had some rather unfortunate side effects. ie I ended up utterly trollied on not a lot of beer. I was rather a prat and was forced to apologise to my friends Ross and Lizzie (who are two of the nicest people in the world!) the next day. They said it was quite ok and I was just funny but I still felt a prat.
And I had the worst hangover since the time I passed out in a flower bed at a wedding. I felt truly, truly, wretched. And I thoroughly deserved it. I am tempted to never ever drink again.
So to today (Monday).
I have been given "Achieving the ambition" training.
What did I learn?
A whole new set of buzz words that's what!
We have the joys of "change journey", "basket of indicators", "Hot houses", "Pace setters," and a "Balanced score card".
I do not know what any of these words actually mean.
I do not believe that the individuals who created them know what they mean either.
Bull shit is conquering the world, bit by bit, and we my friends are going to be subjegated to it if we are not careful.
Finally though there is some good stuff out there! Today is a gorgeous, sunny, early spring day and when I went out at lunch time I bumped into Lizzie who gave me a lift back to work and let me eat the chocolate eclair that I found in her car. Small moments like that can just make you feel really good :-)

This is what Cubs is all about.......
Last night was great, we had moments of organised anarchy when the kids got to play games that burned off some energy but also got them to learn something (in this case about immunisation and later about sport in Africa) and moments of hysterical laughter as they tasted various things blindfloded from all round the world.
We crammed loads in and all the kids loved it and left withhuge grins on their face.
This is what its about, this is why I do it.

The big story this morning is that a teenage girl has ben killed on an outward bound trip on Dartmoor.
This is a tragedy, there are no words that will be able toc omfort her family and friends right now and I can only begin to imagine how the adults that were in charge of the party must feel right now. Anyone that works with kids must consider this as there ultimate nightmare.
Yet already the media, without a full grip on the facts, are starting to point the finger and ask what anyone was doing on Datrmoor on these conditions.
I've seen the tv pictures, heard that there was an inch of rain in 12 hours. These were not particularly bad conditions. As long as care is taken, the right equipment is carried and the right precautions followed then there is no reason why walking parties, even those made of teenagers, should not be out. The benefits of adventurous activities are huge, leadership, self confidence, self respect, fitness, the list goes on and on.
If we end up with parents put off letting their children go or further restrictions placed on what can happen because of what looks like simply a tragic accident then we will all be worse off.
